Supporting women through menopause, Part 1

Transitioning Well, LinkedIn

Menopause is another work-life transition that is often overlooked in the workplace and in the media. Thea O’Connor recently wrote a two-part blog series that focuses on what women can do to prepare for menopause and how employers can support women during this transition. Today we’re sharing part one, which takes an inside look into Thea’s own journey and her key tips for women in their late 30s to early 40s to increase the chances that their menopause transition will be an empowering one. Supporting women through menopause, Part 2

Transitioning Well, LinkedIn

We had a fantastic response to our first menopause blog written by Thea O’Connor. Today we’re sharing the second part in this blog series, which focuses on what employers can do to support women during this transition. In the past 40 years, workforce participation of women aged 55 to 64 years has risen from around 20% to 60%. Given this substantial increase, it only makes sense for employers to think about how they can support and retain experienced women as they transition through menopause. See More…

Baby boomers feel left behind by employers: survey

Transitioning Well, LinkedIn

A new study, recently conducted by Cornerstone in the US, found that the majority of older workers feel like they’re being left behind. 60 % of Baby Boomers felt insecure about their current skillsets, and 73% said their employers don’t help them identify the skills they need to develop for the future. “When people are given the opportunity to learn and grow, they tend to be more engaged—and more engaged teams are more productive,” says Kim Cassady, chief talent officer at Cornerstone. Age discrimination backfiring on employers

Transitioning Well, LinkedIn

“By 2050, I don’t know if you realise, but 22 per cent of the workforce in the OECD countries will be over the age of 55 — that is an increase of 250 per cent on what it is today,” says Frank Ribuot — CEO of recruitment firm Randstad in Australia, New Zealand, South-East Asia and India. At a recent event on ageism in the workplace, Mr Ribuot said that many employers believe recruiting older workers will mean higher turnover and higher rates of sick leave. However, he said that, in reality, the reverse is true. See More…

There’s a yawning gap in the plan to keep older Australians working

Transitioning Well, LinkedIn

Recently, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg called Australia’s ageing population an “economic time bomb”. The federal government wants more older people to keep working. Our work and research at Transitioning Well suggests this requires dramatically reconfiguring work options. There needs to be flexibility in workplaces to create opportunities and encourage continued growth for ageing workers. Managers and organisations need the training not just in technical skills, but also to be able to manage this transitionary period so it works for both employers and employees. See more…

Why it’s important to include age in diversity and inclusion efforts

Transitioning Well, LinkedIn

Discussions about diversity and inclusion in the workforce often exclude ageing workers. Companies can achieve so much by focusing on the strength, experience, and knowledge mature age workers can bring to their teams and it should be a key part of every diversity and inclusion strategy. See more…
